Lutherville was originally founded by two Luther ministers, John Kurtz and John Morris, and was named after the 16thcentury reformer Martin Luther. For many years the churches served as the center point of the community. The neighborhood features a historic district and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. This is an incredibly small community of roughly 15,000 people according to the last census. Timonium is the home of the Maryland State Fair each year.

Lutherville-Timonium is located directly north of Towson and is roughly 7 square miles. The town is located along York Road, which is Maryland Route 45. The Western Border is Interstate 83. The Southern Border is Towson which is north of Baltimore City. The Eastern boundary is the Hampton neighborhood and the line that seperates Lutherville-Timonium is Ridgely Road which is named after a famous wealthy family from the area. In fact, the land that became Lutherville was actually purchased from the Ridgely family!

Where should I eat? 

You come to Baltimore and you come to Maryland for one thing: seafood, and there isn’t a single better seafood spot in all of Lutherville-Timonium that the Bluestone Restaurant. This restaurant focuses on new American seafood and light fare in a new and hip setting. Chef Scott Walker oversees the kitchen that provides fresh seafood meals every single day, seven days a week and is open for lunch and dinner on the weekends as well as serving brunch on the weekends.

Are there parks nearby?

Lutherville-Timonium is home to many of the beautiful parks for you and you dog to enjoy that are within Baltimore County. Orchard Hills Park and Valley Fields Park South are two incredible places to bring your dog and let them stretch out their paws and run around. Seminary Park and Valley Fields North are two great parks to go for a run or have a picnic. Meadowood Regional Park is your home for sports with a playground and numerous trails this is a great spot to bring a ball and glove and get some great excerise in.

What is there to do?

As a historic city, Lutherville-Timonium has many incredible links to our country’s and this community’s past. Places like Oak Grove, which was the home of one of the Lutheran ministers, John Morris, who helped to found Lutherville. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, built in 1856 and started by Morris is still standing and the additional stone sanctuary was built in 1898. St. John’s Methodist and Church of the Holy Comforter are both 19thcentury churches still standing with links back to our shared past.

What places should I visit?

Anything historic in this neighborhood is an incredible way to spend an afternoon and learn more about the community’s history as well as the history of Maryland and the Ridgely Family who helped create large portions of the area. With some many great parks and trails available to you in such a short place Lutherville-Timonium is incredibly walkable with restaurants and public parks for you to enjoy you stay in this lovely community.
