The boundaries of the Highlandtown community are Baltimore Street to the North and Eastern Avenue to the South, Haven Street to the East and Linwood Avenue to the West. Eastern Avenue is the main thoroughfare in the community and has been essential to the revitalization efforts by the state and the Baltimore City Government with for Mayor and Governor Martin O’Malley naming it a Main Street District in an effort to provide more economic incentives for businesses to open there. In an interesting note, the Easternmost eight blocks of the community all begin with letters in alphabetical order from B through H and this continues until the Bayview neighborhood.

Where should I eat?

If you are walking up and down Eastern Avenue and seeking out all of the best small businesses in the community, you should first stop by the China Wok as a place to get some quick grab and go Chinese food. Open six days a week from 11am to 11pm and on Sunday’s the restaurant is open 1pm to 10pm.  This hole in the wall Chinese place has been a staple of the Highland community for more than a decade and has fed many hungry residents and travelers alike. Here the locals rave about the great service and even better food. Particular fan favorites are the orange chicken and shrimp fried rice. You are also going to always want to respond with a hearty, “yes” when asked if you want an egg roll, because trust us, you do from here.

If you aren’t feeling Chinese today, I bet you are feeling like sitting down with some of the best pizza in the city. Matthew’s Pizzeria is an institution in Baltimore. They have been serving up thing crust and deep dish pies for over 75 years and they have no plans of stopping. Open seven days a week and from lunch to late dinner each day, you are never more than a phone call away from some of the best pizza in all of Baltimore. Whether you are getting delivery or eating in the staff is a favorite of the locals and even though they have been in business for 75 years, everything still tastes homemade, the way it was all those years ago before Matthew’s became the smash hit it has become today.

 Is there ever really a better park than a dog park? Highland is right next to one of the biggest in the State of Maryland and certainly one of the biggest in Baltimore City. Patterson Dog Park will keep your furry friend active and happy on their morning, afternoon, or night walks. With turf fields you don’t have to worry about your pet eating grass or other typical park objects. A safe place for friends, family, and fidos!

What is there to do?

The Creative Alliance art center is a great place to see a community performance or to see one of the several art, theater, or film exhibits being done by local artists and performers. It is a highly informal place that also features two incredible bars that you can sit with the cast or performers and discuss their events and performances.
