As the arts community has begin coming into the area and revitalizing the needs of the community, they have begun rehabbing a stretch of West 36thStreet, now known as The Avenue, which contains numerous boutiques, yoga studios, and unique gifts and the needs of the community.

Hampden is located in northern Baltimore and is roughly triangular in shape. Hampden is bordered by Roland Park at 40thand 41stStreets to the North, the neighborhood of Remington to the South, to the West by the Jones Falls Expressway, and on the East by the Wyman Park neighborhood. The Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University is a short walk to the East of the neighborhood.
Where should I eat?
The Hampden Neighborhood is home to one of the most unique restaurants in all of Baltimore, and it is also one of the best-reviewed ones as well. The Food Market may look like a grocery store from the outside, but that is only because in its previous life as a business it was a grocery store! This open kitchen restaurant features creative American fare and cocktails to provide for a memorable experience in a memorable place. Open for dinner only Monday through Thursday, The Food Market opens for all three meals Friday through Sunday with a short close in between lunch and dinner to be best equipped to handle the dinner rush. When you think Baltimore and Maryland you think crab cakes and crab and here at The Food Market you can have one of the best crab cake platters in the whole city, and the little crab pot pie is a must try as well. If you have the chance to visit for brunch on the weekends do so! The brunch menu is worth the wait.

Well the Avenue Kitchen and Bar is for you! This upscale yet casual eatery offers mouth watering BBQ and seafood that will put a smile to your face no matter what kind of day you may be having. Whether you are looking for a place to have a picnic or shoot some hoops, the Buena Vista Park on Buena Vista Avenue is an excellent place to sit back and enjoy your lunch or just a sunny day. Be sure to bring the kids as well as the park offers a playground and a swing set your kids will be sure to love. Locals love all the wide open green spaces at this park that might as well be a canvas to paint your perfect Saturday afternoon on.

Hampden is home to some of Baltimore’s most lively festivals, including the Honfest, named after the Hon character famous across the City of Baltimore, in Spetmeber they host the Hampdenfest which is a celebration of the numerous merchants and residents that call the community home and features an extremely quirky toilet bowl race and local music, and they end the year with an over the top celebration of holiday decorations up and down 34thStreet that brings visitors from all over the world to the historic community.

The bets place to visit is The Avenue, which houses so many great businesses and unique stores that have been essential in the Hampden recovery effort. You can also typically find several beautiful sidewalk art projects going on throughout 36thStreet and each of the locally owned stores and art projects beautifully capture the sense of community in this traditional village.
